English CV for Fresh Graduates: Examples & Templates

The specific challenge for fresh graduates

As a fresh graduate, your CV has a problem: you have limited formal work experience. This is normal, and it is fixable. The solution is not to pad your CV with irrelevant part-time jobs or to use a generic objective statement. The solution is to reframe what counts as relevant evidence.

This guide shows you how to build an English CV that demonstrates your potential even without years of work history. It applies whether you graduated from SMA, SMK, or S1.

What to include when you lack work experience

Academic projects: Final-year thesis, capstone project, group assignments with clear outcomes. These demonstrate research, analysis, and problem-solving.

Internships: Even a 2-3 month internship counts. Treat it like a real job on your CV — describe what you did, what you learned, and what you contributed.

Organisational experience: Student council, campus organisations, volunteer work, event committees. These demonstrate teamwork, initiative, and communication.

Relevant coursework: List 3-5 courses that relate to the role you are targeting. This signals foundational knowledge.

Skills with evidence: Do not just list "Microsoft Excel". Describe how you used it: "Built a financial model in Excel for a university project tracking 6 months of mock portfolio performance."

Freelance or informal work: Content writing, social media management, tutoring, design work for student events. If you were paid or produced real output, it counts.

The structure

1. Contact information

Name, city (not full address), phone, email, LinkedIn, portfolio/GitHub if relevant.

2. Professional summary

3-4 lines. Name your degree, your relevant strengths, and what you are looking for. Tailor it to the role.

3. Education

Institution, degree, expected graduation year (or actual), GPA if above 3.0. Add relevant coursework.

4. Experience (projects, internships, organisations)

Each entry follows the same format: title, organisation, dates, and 2-3 bullets starting with action verbs. Focus on what you did and what changed.

5. Skills

Grouped by category: technical, languages, tools. Add context where possible.

Common mistakes fresh graduates make

1. Generic objective statement

"Hard-working graduate seeking opportunities to grow." Everyone says this. Replace it with a tailored professional summary that names your degree, your relevant experience, and the role you are targeting.

2. Listing all courses taken

No one needs to see your full transcript. Include only 3-5 courses relevant to the role.

3. Describing duties instead of outcomes

"Responsible for managing social media" tells the recruiter nothing. "Grew Instagram following from 2,400 to 3,100 in 3 months" tells them what you can do.

4. Omitting GPA when it is strong

If your GPA is 3.0+, include it. If it is below 3.0, leave it off or include your GPA in your major only.

5. Using the same CV for every application

Tailor your summary, your experience bullets, and your skills to each job. A marketing CV and a data analyst CV should not look identical.

6. Including irrelevant work experience

Your part-time job at a café during high school does not belong on a professional CV unless you are applying for a hospitality role and can frame it as customer service experience.

The one-page question

For fresh graduates, one page is the standard. This is not a rule about font size or margins — it is a discipline. If you cannot fit your CV on one page without shrinking the font below 10pt, you are including too much.

Cut the weakest material first. That might be the high school organisation, the list of 15 courses, or the "interests: reading, travelling" section. Every line should earn its place.

English proficiency and fresh graduates

Many fresh graduates worry that their English is not good enough for an English CV. Here is the reality: employers reading English CVs expect English content. They do not expect native-level perfection.

If your English is intermediate, write shorter sentences. Use simpler words. Proofread carefully. A short, error-free CV reads better than a long, grammatically adventurous one.

If you have evidence of English use (academic writing, presentations, online courses, self-study through content), mention it in your skills section. "English: intermediate — comfortable reading technical documentation and writing emails" is honest and useful.

Summary

A fresh graduate CV is not a lesser version of an experienced professional's CV. It is a different document with a different focus: potential, evidence from projects and internships, and relevant skills.

Structure it clearly. Tailor it to the role. Show outcomes, not just activities. Keep it to one page. Proofread it in English.

Next step: before sending your CV, check whether its claims, structure, and keywords actually align with the job you want. Run a free CV analysis to see where your CV stands.
