CV ATS Maker: Free Tools to Build an ATS-Friendly CV (Compared)

What an ATS CV maker actually does

An ATS CV maker is a tool — web app, Word add-on, or downloadable template — that formats your CV to match what Applicant Tracking Systems can read. It builds the structure, applies standard headings, and outputs a file you can upload to job portals.

That part is real. Where these tools diverge is what they charge for it, whether the output is actually ATS-readable, and what happens to your data after you upload it.

Before using one, it helps to understand the three things every ATS maker has to handle:

1. Structure. The document needs one column, standard section headings ("Work Experience," "Education," "Skills"), and a linear reading flow. If the maker adds a photo, sidebar, or two-column layout, the output is already weaker [1].

2. File format. The system that parses your CV varies by employer. MIT Career Advising notes that DOC/DOCX and PDF are generally safe, but the employer's instruction always wins [1]. A good maker lets you choose; a limited one locks you into PDF only.

3. Keywords. A maker can suggest keywords, but it cannot write your experience. University of Minnesota Duluth's career center stresses that keywords must appear in meaningful context, not stuffed into a hidden list [2].

Free and paid CV makers compared

Most tools below offer a free tier with restricted features. The comparison focuses on what you actually get without paying, and where the limits bite.

1. Google Docs CV templates

Cost: Free

ATS compatibility: High (when chosen correctly)

Google Docs includes several resume and CV templates. The simplest ones — single-column, no tables, standard headings — parse well in ATS. The downside: you must strip out decorative elements yourself. Some templates embed the header line as an image or use tab stops instead of paragraph breaks, which can scramble reading order.

Hidden limits: No keyword analysis, no job-matching suggestions. You are responsible for the content and the format check.

Data privacy: Stored in your Google account. Not shared with recruiters.

2. Canva CV maker

Cost: Free (paid plans $12.99/month)

ATS compatibility: Low to moderate

Canva offers dozens of visual CV templates. Most use multi-column layouts, icons, or graphic elements that ATS systems cannot parse [1]. The free tier lets you download as PDF or PNG, but PNG is an image file — ATS cannot extract text from it.

Hidden limits: Many templates are premium-only. Free downloads include a Canva watermark on some assets. The PDF export may flatten text into shapes, making it unreadable to parsing software.

Data privacy: Canva's privacy policy allows the company to analyze uploaded content. Read the terms before uploading personal information.

3. NovoResume

Cost: Free for one CV (paid from $14/month)

ATS compatibility: Moderate

NovoResume produces single-column, ATS-style documents by default. It prompts you for standard sections and suggests bullet points based on the job title you enter. The output is DOCX or PDF, both selectable-text formats.

Hidden limits: The free tier gives one CV and one cover letter. Each download requires a paid subscription after the trial period. Customisation beyond the template sections is limited.

Data privacy: You create an account with your CV data stored on their servers. Deletion requires contacting support.

4. Resume.io

Cost: Free to build (paid $2.95/week for download)

ATS compatibility: Moderate

Resume.io walks you through a step-by-step builder and previews the output in real time. It uses standard headings and a single-column layout in its default template. The builder flags missing sections.

Hidden limits: You can create and preview for free, but downloading the file requires a paid plan. Some users report difficulty cancelling the recurring subscription. The tool is UK/US-focused, so Indonesian-specific conventions (ID numbers, local education levels) are not accounted for.

Data privacy: Account required. Resume content is stored on company servers.

5. Microsoft Word CV templates

Cost: Free (with Microsoft account)

ATS compatibility: High

Microsoft Word's built-in templates include several single-column CVs that parse correctly. Because you are editing the file directly, you control every element — headings, bullet style, spacing, and font. MIT recommends standard fonts: Arial, Calibri, Cambria, Helvetica, or Times New Roman, minimum 10pt [1].

Hidden limits: No keyword suggestions, no job matching. Some templates use text boxes that ATS systems ignore — remove them before saving [1].

Data privacy: Local file unless you save to OneDrive.

What to watch out for before using any maker

Watermarks on free tiers. Some tools add a "Made with [Tool Name]" footer to free downloads. Check the PDF or Word file before sending.

Paywall on download. The most common trap: you build a CV for free, then discover the download requires a subscription. Read the pricing page before you spend 30 minutes entering your data.

ATS compatibility claims. Any tool can say "ATS-friendly" — not all back it up. A genuinely ATS-friendly document is single-column, uses standard headings, and contains no images carrying critical text. If the maker's preview has a photo, sidebar, or progress bars for skills, test the output by pasting it into a plain-text editor. If the order breaks, the ATS will struggle too [2].

Data you cannot get back. Some makers require account creation and do not offer a delete function. Your CV contains your phone number, address, employment history, and email. Before uploading, confirm whether the tool lets you delete your account and data permanently [3].

When a maker is not enough

A CV maker handles structure. It does not handle three things that matter more:

Writing the experience. MIT recommends using relevant keywords meaningfully, not listing them in a skills section [1]. "Proficient in data analysis" means nothing next to "Analyzed 200+ customer records monthly and reduced response time by 15%." A maker suggests the section heading. You still need to write the sentence.

Matching the job description. The keywords that pass ATS scanning are the ones the employer used in the posting. University of Minnesota Duluth recommends reading the posting carefully and matching the language there [2]. No maker reads the job post for you — that step is manual.

Formatting checks the maker cannot run. After building your CV, save it, then open a copy and convert it to plain text. MIT suggests this to verify nothing is lost or reordered [1]. If the plain text is jumbled, the ATS version will be too.

If you are writing in Indonesian first, the CV ATS guide in Indonesian covers the same principles. Next step: check your CV before you apply

You have the format. You have the keywords. The question is whether your CV actually holds together — whether your experience supports the claims you are making, and whether a recruiter reading for six seconds can follow your story.

Run your CV through CVGym's free analysis tool. It checks structure, keyword alignment, and content gaps specific to the jobs you are targeting. No account required, no watermark on the output.
